Molding Process Engineer

Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibility.

Fiscal Responsibilities: Project budgets.

Monitor and ensure Health & Safety / HACCP / 5S compliance:

  • Proactively identify and suggest ways to eliminate hazards.
  • Correct unsafe acts or conditions, ensuring health & safety policies are followed.
  • Participate in Safety Investigations when required.
  • Provide Safety training when required.

Provide day to day technical support to Molding Operations and Maintenance

  • Thoroughly understand thin wall molding and stacking technology and have ownership for the production processes.
  • Be knowledgeable of quality standards and understand process / product interactions.
  • Develop and maintain all Master Setup Sheets, including monitoring Setup Sheet updates and the Master Setup Sheet Procedure.
  • Act as a resource to Operations, Maintenance and Quality personnel by taking ownership and leading resolution of escalated day to day problems using the Problem Solving methodology.
  • Report on performance and corrective actions at appropriate forums, such as Daily Production Meeting.
  • Provide feedback to Molding Supervision on the compliance to processes and procedures.
  • Oversee and ensure proper execution of all Test Request (including sign off) for new equipment/products/processes for Molding.
  • Be responsible to achieve and report all Cycle-Time and Cavitations targets.

Identify and drive implementation of Continuous Improvements

  • Understand Molding and Toronto Operations objectives and actively seek to understand issues negatively impacting Molding and downstream customer performance and recommend or implement corrective actions.
  • Understand and report on current state process capabilities and reliability.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and participate in establishing the performance metrics and the CI programme for the Department.
  • Lead, facilitate or participate in improvement projects and establishment of associated Standard Work.
  • Facilitate implementation of changes on the shift.
  • Act as Molding’s primary contact and representative to Engineering regarding any Molding process related project or issue.
  • Lead accreditation of new or upgraded processes.
  • Ensure training documentation is complete and training plans in place prior to turnover to Production.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation, spare parts and preventative maintenance programs are in place by project completion.
  • Ensure process improvements deliver projected results.
  • Promote a continuous improvement culture.

Develop skill level of Molding Operations and Maintenance personnel

  • Identify personnel skill gaps and opportunities.
  • Participate with appropriate levels of supervision to establish skill development and training plans.
  • Train personnel as required.

Requirements:

  • Degree in Engineering, P.Eng, or  equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years of technical support experience in a fast paced, high volume Lean Manufacturing environment with 3-5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Proven track record in leading change.
  • Proven ability to deliver results.
  • Ability to effectively coach, manage and support Team Members.
  • Ability to manage significant workload including conflicting priorities.
  • Knowledge of injection molding manufacturing.

Manufacturing Engineering Specialist

Responsibilities:

  • Investigates any new concepts or ideas that could improve any aspect specific to manufacturing/production.
  • Participates on any Continuous Improvement teams as a team member or leader and provides the team with expertise, direction and advice.  Responsible as a team leader to manage the Continuous Improvement project by documenting each meeting, establishing timelines, goals, objectives and working within budget parameters.
  • Monitors the progress of jobs being performed by vendor(s), Tool and/or Maintenance room and provides direction as necessary.
  • Facilitate training sessions to internal employees on an as needed basis (may include welding, robotics, PLC)
  • Responsible for documenting current projects e.g. cost, quotes, pay back, timelines, goals, etc. and provides information to management.
  • Co-ordinates the implementation of ECN’s (Engineering Change Notices), internally or customer driven.
  • Responsible for updating and product related documentation, e.g. set-up and operator instruction sheets, etc. and providing operator training as required.  Assists operators in trouble shooting issues related to new equipment and provides recommendations on corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.
  • Deals with customers on continuous improvement activities directly related to part/component in manufacturing.
  • Train maintenance employees on how to maintain equipment and follow procedures when trouble-shooting for equipment related to the Continuous Improvement projects.
  • Works co-operatively with Program Manager on new product launches to develop the budget and equipment acquisition when requested.
  • Team member on various Continuous Improvement teams within the organization.
  • Any other reasonable request made by management.
  • Contributes to a safe, clean and comfortable work environment that complements the Occupational Health and Safety Act by ensuring the principles of the 5S discipline (simplify, separate, sanitize, standardize and support) are supported and adhered to.

Requirements:

Project Engineer/Manager

Responsibilities:

Project Management:

  • Establish multi disciplinary project teams and oversee all project activities
  • Develop a detailed project timeline, which lists all the critical steps necessary to complete the project from concept to closure.
  • Monitor project timelines and activities and adjust/escalate as required to maintain project priorities
  • Provide input to the Finance Department to aid on the accurate costing of new products and processes
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget and to the agreed upon deliverables (documented in the Project Contract)
  • Contingency planning and risk management for new products/processes and any potential effects on existing products/processes
  • Co-ordinate mold/system design reviews and provide final approval
  • Ensure Preventative Maintenance plans for new product/processes are developed, applicable and can be supported by Operations
  • Coordinate activities related to new mold/system tests
  • Approve new products/processes based on product specifications and customer requirements
  • Seek product approvals and sign-offs from stakeholders including Production, Sales Quality Control and external customers
  • Provide regular project status update reports to Project Team and Senior Management
  • Escalate to Manager E&T when actions, events, etc, jeopardize the successful launch of a new product/system

Supporting Product Design to Optimize Manufacturability:

  • Commercialize new molds and systems

Supply Management:

  • Procure approved project equipment, molds, materials, etc.
  • Ensure suppliers meet their contractual requirements and provide the appropriate levels of support to the company

Technical Support:

  • Technical Resource for internal customers in Head Office, Toronto and Kansas City facilities
  • Provide technical expertise to the Sales Group when discussing potential new products with customers
  • Engage third party contractors (i.e. Filling Equipment Suppliers, etc.) to provide technical services to our customers
  • May personally perform customer technical service
  • May perform presentations to customers in support of our Sales Group
  • Provide written reports to support sales and marketing efforts with customers

Requirements:

  • 4 Year Engineering or Technical Degree (or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years in a fast paced, high volume manufacturing environment.

Product Designer (II)

Responsibilities:

Product Design - Existing Packaging Solutions:

  • Reproduce and value engineer existing market packaging solutions formed using either injection molding or thermoforming and decorated by dry offset printing, shrink sleeving, labelling or other processes
  • Develop part design matrices, concept drawings and detailed drawings as required for: key design detail comparisons between multiple packaging solution alternatives and/or support of sales and marketing activities
  • Existing market packaging solutions to be reproduced and value engineered to function on existing or proposed filling systems while adhering to the customer’s marketing and sales objectives
  • Provide input to the Finance Department to aid in the accurate costing of packaging solutions (part weight, cavitation, etc.)
  • Provide concept and detailed drawings to Project Manager and/or Tooling suppliers to facilitate quoting, design and manufacture of mold components
  • Escalate to Manager E&T when actions, events, etc, jeopardize the successful reproduction and value engineering of a packaging solution
  • Ensure adherence to the New Product Development Process (NPDP)

Product Design - New Packaging Solutions:

  • Design new and innovative packaging solutions formed using either injection molding or thermoforming and decorated by dry offset printing, shrink sleeving, labelling or other processes

  • Provide corrugate options information to the Finance Department to aid in the accurate costing of existing and new packaging solutions
  • Coordinate with corrugate suppliers to provide sample corrugate for testing and evaluation
  • Work with TO and LS purchasing personnel to order and “fill the system” with new corrugate
  • Develop, document and maintain the Company's corrugate design standards
  • Ensure corrugate suppliers meet their contractual requirements and provide the appropriate levels of support to the Company
  • Execute processes related to Product Change Notification (PCN) system
  • Ensure adherence to the New Product Development Process (NPDP)

CAD System Administration and Technical Support:

  • Develop, document and maintain Company packaging design standards
  • Administration of Company CAD system (both electronic and hard copies)
  • Data Control - including file revisions, data security, efficiency, access and retrieval
  • Provide technical expertise as required to the Sales Group when discussing potential new products with customers
  • Manage third party CAD system suppliers and contractors
  • May personally perform customer technical service
  • May perform presentations to customers in support of our Sales Group
  • Manage third party rapid prototyping suppliers
  • Procure rapid prototyping samples (SLAs, etc.) as directed by the Manager of E&T

Qualifications:

  • Post Secondary Engineering or Technical Degree or Diploma
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in 3D plastic packaging design (thinwall plastic part design preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in CAD system administration
  • Minimum of 5 years working in a fast paced, high volume manufacturing environment
  • Experience with corrugate design an asset
  • Expert working knowledge of Solidworks 3D Modeling Software and Microsoft Office
  • Flexible and able to handle a dynamic working environment with shifting priorities and deliverables
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a multidisciplined team
  • Strong knowledge of plastic injection molding and thermoforming processes (thinwall experience preferred)

Continuous Improvement Leader

Purpose of Position:

To lead, facilitate and participate in continuous improvement projects and activities, develop the skill and abilities of Team Members and ensure proper usage and application of standardized process methodologies and tools to improve safety, quality, delivery and productivity performance by reducing costs and eliminate waste throughout Toronto Operations.

Responsibilities:

Provide technical support

  • Provide day to day support to Toronto Operation with respect to application of standardized process methodologies and tools for activities related to quality, cost reliability, flexible operations, safety, housekeeping, yield improvements, troubleshooting and root cause analysis, etc.

  • Provide 6σ support, such as statistical data analysis, as required.

Develop CI skills and ensure compliance to corporate Lean/6σ standards

  • Be the subject matter expert of Lean and Six Sigma tools such as 5S, Value Stream Mapping, TPM, Problem Solving, JIT, Jidoka, Kanban, Kaizen, Project Management, FMEA, etc.

  • Provide formal training on tools and process methodologies.

  • Provide informal coaching and mentoring to develop the skill and ability of other Company Team Members.

  • Ensure compliance to established Lean/6σ standard tools and process methodologies.

Lead, facilitate & participate in new process implementations

  • Lead and/or participate in preparation of feasibility studies, business cases, financial justifications and CARS for capital projects.

  • Prepare and/or assist in the preparation of project charters and plans.

  • Establish work flows and layouts to minimize waste and optimize ergonomics and productivity.

Engineering Manager Affinity

Purpose of Position:

To manage the activities of the Engineering department (Program management, Process Engineering, Manufacturing engineering, Industrial engineering) To manage and set direction for the  direct reports, creating procedures and policies.

Responsibilities:

  • Directs the activities of the Engineering department and provide support to them during program preparation, program launch, initial production, and production phases, and achievement of engineering standards as well as quality criteria.
  • Reviews all programs to ensure that action plans, timelines, budgets and customer requirements are met and/or exceeded.
  • Development of first line supervision based on corporate strategic direction.
  • Participates in engineering management meetings to promote cross functioning of the Engineering Department.
  • Participates in reviews regarding product concept and design offering constructive input about manufacturing feasibility and viability as well as options to achieve best in class processes.
  • Provides all engineering documentation required by internal/external customers and responsible for being proactive in the development and use of new technology to improve manufacturing processes to meet quality standards.
  • Participates in regular discussions with external customers, Product Design/Product Lifecycle Engineering and Sales/Advanced Engineering, and Planning on relevant engineering topics.
  • In conjunction with the Quality Manager and all other managers ensures that the process is deployed to support the gateway system.
  • Ensures submittal of accurate documentation to the customer for final approval so that production may produce  as per customer requirements as well as ensure all Quality Control documentation is accurate and up to date.
